Every year, millions of Muslim pilgrims from around the world gather in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, to perform the Hajj or Umrah. This massive religious congregation, characterized by extreme crowding, significantly increases the risk of infectious disease transmission. To protect both your own health and that of others, vaccination with the ACWY-type quadrivalent meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MenACWY) is a mandatory entry visa requirement imposed by the Saudi Arabian government, and an essential preparation for every pilgrim before departure.

What is the MenACWY Vaccine?

The MenACWY vaccine is a conjugate vaccine that provides protection against four serogroups of meningococcal bacteria: A, C, W-135, and Y. These four serogroups are the most common causes of invasive meningococcal disease, including meningitis and septicemia. They are particularly prone to transmission and outbreaks in large gathering events like the Hajj.

In simple terms, "Men" stands for Meningococcus, and "ACWY" represents the four serogroups covered by the vaccine. A single dose of the MenACWY vaccine offers protection against these four high-risk strains.

Why is it Mandatory?

Meningococcal infection is a severe bacterial illness that can lead to meningitis (inflammation of the lining around the brain and spinal cord) and septicemia (blood poisoning). The disease can progress rapidly and can be fatal. During the Hajj, millions of people are in close contact, living and praying together, creating an ideal environment for the spread of meningococcal bacteria. This has led to serious outbreaks during pilgrimages in the past.

To prevent such outbreaks, the Saudi Ministry of Health mandates that all pilgrims aged one year and above, as well as seasonal workers in the Hajj zones, must present a valid certificate of vaccination against ACWY-type meningococcal disease. This requirement protects not only you as an individual but also safeguards the health of every member of the pilgrimage community. Cases of W-type meningococcal infection in pilgrims were reported in early 2025, highlighting the critical importance of timely vaccination.

Meningococcal Vaccination – Key Points

To ensure your vaccination record complies with Saudi Arabian regulations, please pay close attention to the following:

Timing of Vaccination

You must receive your vaccination at least 10 days before your departure. This is because your body needs sufficient time to develop an adequate immune response and protective antibodies. It is strongly recommended that you schedule an appointment at a travel health clinic 2 to 4 weeks before your trip to allow ample time.

Vaccine Type and Validity Period

  • Conjugate Vaccine: This is the currently recommended type. The certificate of vaccination is valid if issued at least 10 days before arrival and within the last 5 years.
  • Polysaccharide Vaccine: Some regions may still use this type. The certificate validity is shorter: it must be issued at least 10 days before arrival and within the last 3 years.
