Because the World Health Organization (WHO) found that the B/Yamagata lineage virus has not been detected globally since March 2020. With this strain essentially extinct, the WHO recommended that the Northern Hemisphere switch to a trivalent vaccine this year to focus on currently circulating strains.
According to guidelines from the World Health Organization and the Hong Kong Centre for Health Protection, trivalent vaccine is effective in preventing influenza and provide comparable levels of protection.
The key is timely vaccination. We recommend getting vaccinated before flu season.
The optimal window for vaccination is during autumn (September to December). It takes about two weeks to develop sufficient antibodies. As Hong Kong's flu season typically peaks from January to March, getting vaccinated anytime before the peak offers protection.
